Your images are processed on your device
Stencily turns every image into a stencil inside your browser, using your device's own processor. Without an account, your history stays on this device. We also count, anonymously, how many stencils are made.
The 5 most recent images
To keep the service running and catch problems, we temporarily keep the 5 most recent images made on Stencily, with or without an account: the photo at a reduced size and the final stencil. Each one is deleted automatically as soon as 5 newer ones are made. Only the site's administrator sees them, and they are never shared or published.
Your history
Every image you open in the editor is added to your history so you can reopen it later. Without an account, the history is kept only in your browser. With an account, a black-and-white copy of the photo, the slider values and a small preview of the stencil are stored with your account, so the same history appears on every device you sign in on. The photos stored in your history are private: only you can see them. Each entry is deleted automatically one year after you first opened it, and you can delete any entry yourself at any time.
Account and payments
You don't need an account to start. If you create one, we store your email address, how many stencils you have opened and your history (see above) — no names, no password. Payments are handled by Stripe; your card details go to Stripe and never reach us. You can cancel from your account page at any time.
Cookies we use
Small technical cookies: one that remembers the language you chose, one that remembers that you have seen the cookie notice, and, if you sign in, a session cookie that keeps you signed in. We also use DataFast, a privacy-friendly analytics service, to learn how many people visit, where they come from and which parts of the tool they use. DataFast sets two first-party cookies (a random visitor id and a session id) that hold no personal data, are shared with nobody and are not used to follow you across other sites. We never use advertising cookies.
Local storage
While you are editing, the image you selected is kept in your browser's session storage so it survives a page reload; it is deleted automatically when the tab is closed. The count of free stencils you have opened without an account is kept in your browser's local storage, and your history in its IndexedDB storage.
